Nathaniel Strayhorn 1765-1840

I've always thought Nathaniel Strayhorn was  related to Maria Jane Strayhorn, and recently my mom's dna test connected with Nathaniel - so I'm pretty certain I'm correct, although I have not found the paper trail yet!   Zentemeyer genealogy lists her as a daughter - with a birthdate of 1814 instead of 1822, which would make her 10 years older than her husband Lewis Aikey...  And in the 1880 census, she does give an age that would make her birth year 1814.  In every census prior, her age would have made her birth year 1822...

Probably Heather's Maternal 4th great grandparents

Nathaniel Strayhorn
Born 1765 In Ireland
Died April 1840 In Union County Pa.
Married
Olympia Joudon
Daughter Of Francis & Mary (Roberts) Joudon

1764 - Olympius Joudon is Born

The daughter of Francis Jodon & Mary Roberts, Olympia,  was born in 1760 and married William Walker - Wm. Walker, of Warrington Township, Bucks Co., in will dated July 14, 1789, probated Sept. 29, 1789, mentions- wife Olympia and children, John and Mary (both young), and appoints his friend John Weir, of Warrington, and brother-in-law, " Peter Judon," Executors. (Nathaniel Strayhorn was a witness on this will)

Olympia married first William Walker, and after his death, married Nathaniel Strayhorn.

1765 - Nathaniel Strayhorn was born
In Ireland or possibly Scotland. His brother Samuel states in the 1880 census that he was born in Ireland, so I think it likely Nathaniel was born in Ireland as well.

Wife of Capt. William Housel, mother of Jacob, Jr. Leah and Mary Housel. (mary's maiden name is given on daughters death certificate)

Lewisburg, Union Co., 7 June, Capt. William HOUSEL, in his 61st year.
Capt. HOUSEL served five years in the Regular Army of the U.S., part of the time as a private and part as orderly sergeant, and as in active service on the Canada frontier during the whole of the last war with Great Britain. He was taken prisoner in Dec. 1813, together with a small detachment of Americans, and marched to Quebec - suffering much hardship on the road and treated with much brutality. He rejoined his regiment in the succeeding month of June - participated in the bloody battles of Chippewa and Bridgewater (or Lundy's Lane) - and was in Ft. Erie when its magazine exploded during an assault from a storming party of he enemy. At Lundy's Lane, his company was the first in the field, and his comrades mowed down by platoons: yet he passed through the war without receiving a serious wound, and returned to die at the home of his youth.
In 1843, he attended the Volunteer Encampment at Danville to meet his old commander, Gen. SCOTT, who recognized, and gave him a most cordial greeting.
Capt. HOUSEL was a devoted husband and father, a kind neighbor, a brave and unflinching soldier, possessed of more than an ordinary share of military spirit and enthusiasm - but modest and reserved in referring to the incidents of his own military experience, which circumstances will account for the meagerness of this sketch. As his body wasted by disease, his thoughts were turned upon the future state, and he hoped to enjoy it through the Savior's merits.
His remains were borne by the Lewisburg Infantry and the Cameron Guards, followed by a large concourse of citizens, to the Lewisburg Cemetery, where he was interred, on a Saturday afternoon last."

~Obit of Capt. William HOUSEL, "Lewisburg Chronicle", 12 June 1850, pg 2.

1800 Census

In the 1800 Census Nathaniel  would be approximately 35 years old.  There are two men between the ages of 26 & 44 in this census - and one female (Olympia) over the age of 26, with 3 members of the household being over the age of 25.  I don't know who the other male is, he would be too old to be Nathaniel's son.  John Walker, stepson of Nathaniel, would have been 11

That leaves 6 children in this census.  4 boys, and 2 girls.

Mary Walker, age 23, must be married and living elsewhere by now?

1820 Census
In 1820 Nathaniel and Olympia are around 55 years old.  I do not know for certain if their household contains grandchildren in addition to children.

If Maria Jane Strayhorn was born in 1814, instead of 1822, she would be one of the femals under age 10 here.

1830 census
In 1830 Nathaniel and Olympia are around 65 years old.  Nathaniel is listed as head of household here, and although he is not indexed, a look at the actual census image does show a mark for one male between 60 and 70.  There are 7, not 6, members of this household when looking at the image for this census.

Maria Jane Strayhorn would be about 8 years old in 1830 if she was born in 1822.  If she was born in 1814, she would be 16 and one of the two females listed between ages 15 and 19.

Daniel Burns 1838 –

(birthdates above cannot be correct. Lydia should be the 3rd child with 2 older and 5 younger brothers, and one sister.  Pension application tells us they had "9 children and several dead)

Time Line:

1791 - Henry Burns is Born
Northumberland, Pennsylvania, United States

From the marriage record of Henry's daughter Lydia, who married Jacob Sulouff - Jacob and Lydia (Burns) Sulouff were married in Zion Lutheran, Sunbury, by Lydia's uncle, Rev. Peter Born, professor at Missionary Institute (now Susquehanna Univ.), Selinsgrove PA.
Rev Peter Born married Sarah Hill.  He was born on July 3 1820,  Died May 1899. That would make him 30 years younger than Henry - leading me to believe that Henry and Rev. Peter Borns father were brothers, not Henry and Rev Borns.  Rev.  Peter Born's parents were Peter and Elizabeth (App) Born, and they lived in Lycoming County PA.

Lydia Grimm Is Born
Her maiden name is given in the pension file as Krimm.
On her daughter Lydia's death certificate it's given as Grimm
On her son Jonathan's death certificate as Grimm

1831 - Son Lafayette is born

Lafayette Burns died suddenly at his home in Woodbury Sunday afternoon. After eating dinner he laid down on the couch and later was discovered dead by members of the family. He was aged 74 years, eight months and 13 days. He was a resident of this county at least 55 years He was a soldier of the civil war, having been a member of company H, two hundred and eight regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers. He is survived by his wife and the following children. George, of Everett; John, of Johnstown; Edgar and Mrs. Jennie Stayer, of Woodbury,

Bedford Gazette Edition of Friday, April 6, 1906.

1832- Son Henry Jackson Burns Is Born

The death certificates of three of his children, Charles, Ivan and Alice, tell us that he married Sarah Josephine Kellog.  Although the census records show him as born in 1831, his civil war draft registration gives a birth date of about 1834.  Since his brother Lafayette was born in 1831, I'm guessing Henry was probably born in 1832.  It is a guess at this point.

1833 - Son Frederick Burns is born
I can find no records for Frederick. There is a Frederick Burns born in 1825 in Lycoming County, but he is the son of Daniel Burns, NOT Henry.

1834 - Daughter Mary Ann Burns is Born
She married Michael Lauver

1836 - Son Jonathan Burns is born
Jonathan married Catherine Pfeifer

According to census records, Jonathan was a millwright. Him and his wife lived in Juniata County and had children including Mary, Theodore, Elias, and John.

The Will Of Henry Burns

The last will and testament of Henry Burns of Delaware Township Juniata County. In the name of God I Henry Burns considering the uncertainty of this Mortal life and being of sound mind and memory, blessed by the Mighty God for the same,  do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my eldest son John Burns the sum of $200 more than any of the rest of my children.  He is to receive the money  when  the farm is sold.

If I am to  depart this life soon, there is to  be no appraisement to be made until the fall crop is in the ground.  And the family is to have corn, oats, buckwheat and wheat and rye sufficient for feeding and house use until next Harvest.

I also give and bequeath unto my wife Lydia Burns all that the law allows to Widow as long as she remains my widow.  But if she is to et married she is to have no use at the house, barn, fruit or gardens.

Burial -

John Sell being duly affirmed according to law doth say I am acquainted with Lydia Burns the present applicant for bounty and her husband Henry Burns now dead.  He was buried on the fifth day of August 1851.  I was at the funeral as undertaker and had the coffin made, had him put into it, and had him buried.  Mrs Burns lives in the same place where her husband did, and is still a widow.  I was not at the marriage of Mrs Burns and her deceased husband Henry Burns but they lived together as man and wife in my neighborhood for a number of years and always reported as such.  They raised a family of children some of whom live in the same township I do, and who enjoy and occupy the estate of their father Henry Burns, deceased, and further that I have no interest in this claim.
