1804 - Land Purchase
Philip L. Webster, planter, purchased a tract of land called "Battasay", part of "Atheys Folley", on March 24 1804, from Richard Stonestreet, for $250.  The tract contained three acres with dwelling houses, barns, etc, and adjoined James Gregory's lot.  
Along the "road leading from Picataway to the head of Broad Creek and Washington City and Slash Creek."  This tract came to be known as White Horse Tavern.

One of the principal roads in the southwestern part of the county ran directly through the Broad Creek community; this road connected the Town of Piscataway with Sr. John's Church and then continued north to the Eastern Branch and/or (by ferry across the Potomac) to Alexandria. Travelers making this journey relied upon taverns along the wal for rest and refreshment, not only for the passengers, bur for their horses. One such tavern, the Slash Creek or White Horse Tavern, was located on this road (now Livingston Road), immediately south of Harmony Hall, at the present intersection of Livingston and Fort Washington Roads. Many taverns are known to have operated in the village of Broad Creek during the eighteenth century, but little is known about them other than the names of the proprietor licensees in the case of the White Horse, more information is available.

The White Horse Tavern stood on the west side of the road that ran south from St. John's Church to Piscataway and operated from the very early years of the nineteenth century. In 1804, Philip Webster purchased three acres of Battersea "at the road leading from Piscataway to the head of Broad Creek." From that time until his death in 1818, Webster
operated a tavern on this property, known variously as the Slash Creek or White Horse Tavern. After Webster's death, the tavern stand was acquired by Henry Culver Thorn, who operated it until his death in 1872. The White Horse was a landmark in the Broad Creek community to the extent that, during much of the nineteenth century, the Harmony Hall
property was identified in legal instruments as adjoining the tavern or the Henry C. Thorn property. The old tavern building and its prominent White Horse sign lasted until the end of the nineteenth century.

Philip Levin Webster would have been about 48 years old in the war of 1812.  Although possible that this is his service record, it's also possible this was a younger relative?

1882 Land Dispute
In 1882, some of the Webster descendants filed a case against the owners of the White Tavern and land in Prince George’s County, Maryland. From the marriage record of Henry's daughter Lydia, who married Jacob Sulouff - Jacob and Lydia (Burns) Sulouff were married in Zion Lutheran, Sunbury, by Lydia's uncle, Rev. Peter Born, professor at Missionary Institute (now Susquehanna Univ.), Selinsgrove PA.  
Rev Peter Born married Sarah Hill.  He was born on July 3 1820,  Died May 1899. That would make him 30 years younger than Henry - leading me to believe that Henry and Rev. Peter Borns father were brothers, not Henry and Rev Borns.  Rev.  Peter Born's parents were Peter and Elizabeth (App) Born, and they lived in Lycoming County PA.

1831 - Son Lafayette is born

Lafayette Burns died suddenly at his home in Woodbury Sunday afternoon. After eating dinner he laid down on the couch and later was discovered dead by members of the family. He was aged 74 years, eight months and 13 days. He was a resident of this county at least 55 years He was a soldier of the civil war, having been a member of company H, two hundred and eight regiment, Pennsylvania volunteers. He is survived by his wife and the following children. George, of Everett; John, of Johnstown; Edgar and Mrs. Jennie Stayer, of Woodbury,

1832- Son Henry Jackson Burns Is Born

The death certificates of three of his children, Charles, Ivan and Alice, tell us that he married Sarah Josephine Kellog.  Although the census records show him as born in 1831, his civil war draft registration gives a birth date of about 1834.  Since his brother Lafayette was born in 1831, I'm guessing Henry was probably born in 1832.  It is a guess at this point.

I can find no records for Frederick. There is a Frederick Burns born in 1825 in Lycoming County, but he is the son of Daniel Burns, NOT Henry.

According to census records, Jonathan was a millwright. Him and his wife lived in Juniata County and had children including Mary, Theodore, Elias, and John.

The Will Of Henry Burns

The last will and testament of Henry Burns of Delaware Township Juniata County. In the name of God I Henry Burns considering the uncertainty of this Mortal life and being of sound mind and memory, blessed by the Mighty God for the same,  do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following.

First I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Lydia Burns the privilege, of two rooms in the house and all kinds of fruit enough for her use.  And the use of the kitchen for cooking and a part of the garden and barn room for a cow. And feed for the cow.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my eldest son John Burns the sum of $200 more than any of the rest of my children.  He is to receive the money  when  the farm is sold.

If I am to  depart this life soon, there is to  be no appraisement to be made until the fall crop is in the ground.  And the family is to have corn, oats, buckwheat and wheat and rye sufficient for feeding and house use until next Harvest.

 I also give and bequeath unto my wife Lydia Burns all that the law allows to Widow as long as she remains my widow.  But if she is to et married she is to have no use at the house, barn, fruit or gardens.

Not more than  twenty four or twenty five acres of winter grain to be put out in one year on the farm. About six or seven acres of corn and four acres of oats and no buckwheat.  No cattle or beast t of any kind to be turned into the orchard, and not more than five or six head of horn cattle, and two head of horses to be kept on the place.  I wish to have fifty dollars worth of lime put on the farm. 

 Item.  I give and bequeath the rest of my sons and daughters equal shared on my real and personal estate.  

I hereby appoint Christian Lauver executor of this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills by me made.  In witness of where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal the fifth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty one.

Burial - 

John Sell being duly affirmed according to law doth say I am acquainted with Lydia Burns the present applicant for bounty and her husband Henry Burns now dead.  He was buried on the fifth day of August 1851.  I was at the funeral as undertaker and had the coffin made, had him put into it, and had him buried.  Mrs Burns lives in the same place where her husband did, and is still a widow.  I was not at the marriage of Mrs Burns and her deceased husband Henry Burns but they lived together as man and wife in my neighborhood for a number of years and always reported as such.  They raised a family of children some of whom live in the same township I do, and who enjoy and occupy the estate of their father Henry Burns, deceased, and further that I have no interest in this claim.

1879 - Neighbors Joel Smedly and Samuel Watts swear Lydia is the widow of Henry Burns, and that they have known her 30 years.

1879 - February - Pension office requests proof that Lydia has remained a widow.

1886 - Pension office sends a letter to the Postmaster asking if Lydia has died or remarried, that her last known address was at that place in 1883.  Postmaster replies that she died January 28 1884.

There is a GRIMM Family book written by Luther GRIMM at the Mount Pleasant, Pa Library

The below cannot be correct for our Henry - the Henry born to Peter and Barbara died without issue.  And he was most likely born 30 years before "our" Henry.  Another researcher has our Henry as the grandson of this Peter, son of his son Peter & Catherine Grimm.

PETER BOHRN (Burn) arrived in Philia. 13 Aug. 1750 on Ship Edinburgh from Rotterdam, but last from Porthmouth in England. He married about 1753 to BARBARA (STRUB?) Peter d.1791in Northumberland Co. Barbara d. 1805 in Lancaster Co.

I n 1851 John Braus signed an agreement with his parents. It is recorded i n Deed Book O page 169 a t Lewisburg, Union Co. Pa. John bound himself to Henry and Margaret for $1800.00 f or two tracts of land and $1000.00 for all household goods, animals and wagons. He is to keep his parents during all their natural life, and pay these amounts to his brothers a their parent's death.
