1864 - Son William Columbus Simms is Born
William was born September 29 1864 in Maryland.  He married Emilia J. Uphole, the widow of Jesse Theodore Lower. Emily had married Jesse Lower around 1884, and they had 6 children - Lana, Mary, Sarah, John, Sidney & Gladys.  In 1900, both her husband Jesse, and her youngest daughter Gladys, died.  Sometime before September 1903 she married William C. Simms, and they had two more children, Beulah & Doyle.

In 1910 Emily is listed as head of house, with sons John & Sydney Lower, & Doyle Simms, and daughter Beulah Simms.  She has two boarders living with her, a Joseph Pinkerton & John Price.  She's still listed as married.  In 1920 her last name is still Simms, and she is running a boarding house, with Beulah & Doyle both still living at home with her.  I do not know where William was in 1910 & 1920.

William Columbus Simms died December 19 1921.  His occupation was given as machinist, and his death certificate tells us he was divorced.  The certificate says he was buried in Morgantown.  I'm unable to find a cemetery named Morgantown.

By 1930 Emily has remarried to Marcellus Reger.  Emily died in 1940 in Ohio.

William's death certificate was filled in by his daughter Beulah, and as sometimes happens, she filled in HER parents under the lines mother and father, rather than William's Parents.  So on his death certificate, William's "father" is himself, and "Mother" is his wife.

1867 -  Daughter Mary Ellen Simms is Born
Age: 32, Residence 138 Columbia, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Mary Ellen was born May 25 1867.  She married Albert E. Smith who worked in a sawmill, and she had at least 4 children. A grandson lived with them in 1920. She died December 2 1951 in Alexandria Virginia, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in MD.

1872 - son Richard D. Simms is born

Richard is found in the census as William R. Simms, married to "Lena".  This is especially odd, because Richard has a brother names William, and he's Richard D. Simms in many records through 1900.  He disappears in 1910, and then in 1920 he reappears as William R. and retains that name through
SIMMS, LENA On June 15, 1949 Lena (nee Dugelman) of 326 Whitridge Ave. aged 87 years, beloved wife of the last William R. (Richard D.) Simms. 1902 Clara Died

Research:
The Simms Aversion To Tombstones -
Albert C. Simms died 1883 in Maryland
Clara Mitchell Simms death certificate tells us she was buried in Bethel Cemetery in Camden NJ
Also at Western Cemetery, with no stones:
   James Simms 1860-1886

Beulah Laverda Simms married George Lumbard.  They are buried in the Union Cemetery in Snyder County PA.
George has a stone, there's an empty spot beside him - so stone for Beulah Laverda Simms.

Clara Amelia Simms also came to PA, married Joseph Smith, and they are buried in the Union Cemetery with the Lumbards.
   No stone for Clara Simms.

Clara's daughter Nellie Married John Howard Krebbs. There's a stone for John Krebbs, and a HUGE stone for their 8 month old child.
   No stone for Nellie.

Other children of Albert Simms & Clara Mitchell:

Daughter Mary E. Simms born May 1867 - I cannot find any more information about her.
Richard D Simms born May 23 1872 - I know he was alive until 1903, but I have not found a record of his death or burial.

===============================================================
Look for Pension Records

I'm curious about the "Laverda/Alverda". First they have a daughter Laverda. Then they have another daughter, and her middle name is Laverda?  Then Beulah Alverda & George Meade Lumbard have a daughter Ruth Laverda Lumbard.

  1. Just wanted to let you know thanks for all the research. It must have takes a lot of time. I have been to find all of my Civil War ancestors. Albert C Simms was my 4th great-grandfather, and Mary Ellen Simms was my 3rd great-grandmother. I am also looking to find as many pictures of ancestors as possible.
