Summary - by Heather (Sulouff) Truckenmiller

My great great grandfather George Mead Lumbard was born September 1874, the son of J.A. Lumbard, who owned the Snyder County Tribune, and Sarah Scharf, grandaugther of the Scharf clockmaker.
He was baptized October 4th 1879 in the First Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove, Union County PA.

An article in the Snyder County Tribune tells us that in August of 1890, age 15,  George M. Lumbard rescued Anna Alleman, youngest daughter of Horance Alleman, from the canal at McKelvy's wharf.  The article was followed up later with one that tells us that the Alleman family presented GEorge with a sivler bagdge which was engraved "A Token Of Gratitude to George M. Lumbard, by the parents of Anna M. Alleman, for braverin in rescuing her from a watery grave. Selinsgrove, August 1 1890."

In February of 1896, age 21, George married Anna Laura Keller, daughter of David Keller.  On their marriage application, George listed his occupation as Bridge Builder.

In 1897 Geo. M. Lumbard leases the Masser estate ferry to carry passengers from the junction to town in the absence of the NCR connection formerly made by the "Shifter". (I'm just starting to research this - I have no idea what it refers to)

In 1900, many PA papers carried the story of George & Laurie & their son Keller going on a camping trip, and being trapped by a wildcat.
In 1901, George was elected bourough inspector.
In 1906,the papers tell us that George once again rescued someone from the water - this time Charles McDall was rescued by him, after his yacht capsized at the yacht races.
In 1907, and several other years, George Lumbard had the highest score at the gun club competitions.  He was also mentioned in the paper that year, when him and his son Keller came across 250 carp in the Susuehanna River,  Two of the ones he caught were 14lbs each, and apparently seeing carp in the river was unheard of.

George and Laura (Keller) Lumbard had 4 children - Keller  Lumbard, Kathleen Lumbard, George W. Lumbard, & Robert Kurtz Lumbard.

In 1907, their son Robert died of Cholera, age 4 years, 3 months, and 9 days.  At the time, they lived on East Walnut Street in Selinsgrove PA.

Son Kellar Lumbard served overseas in WWI from May 1918-May 1919. at Argonne & also at St Mihiel in 1918.  He as slightly wounded Nov 10 1918, in action. His baptismal record in 1903, as well as his marriage record in 1961, shows his name as Keller Loreno Lumbard, rather than Joseph Keller Lumbard.  This makes more sense, since George later has another son, with his second wife, named Joseph Lumbard.  But his draft card shows his name as Joseph Keller Lumbard.  He goes by Keller in most records.  Keller appears to have been married at least 3 times.  In 1920 he's listed as widowed.  In 1934 his pension application lists wife Katy Della (Huff) Lumbard, and a daughter, Harried Lumbard.  In 1940 Katy & Helen are not living with Keller, I have not located where Keller was in 1940.  In 1961 Keller, age 65,  married Josephine Alfretta Carper, age 36.

Daughter Kathleen, born 1901, lived to be 106 years old, dying in 2007.  Kathleen was interviewed for her 106th birthday, and the following is an excerpt from what appeared in the newspaper:
"“My earliest memories are not very nice,” Dempsey admitted. She was born on Feb. 15, 1901 in Selinsgrove, Pa. to George and Laura Lumbard, one of nine children (though four of her siblings came from her father’s second marriage). At the early age of six or seven, young Kathleen, who everyone called and continues to call Kitty, was struck with tragedy when her mother died. In the wake of her mother’s death, Kitty’s father “kept his kids together the best he could,” said Dempsey, but for the young girl, life turned hard. One of the oldest among her siblings, Kitty cared for her younger brothers and sisters and was sent to work at an early age. “I went to work before and after school in the silk mill,” she said. “We had a humble home. There was nothing rich about it; it was poor.”
Dempsey never made it to college, though Selinsgrove is home to Susquehanna University. “God, no,” she said, when asked if she attended college. “I didn’t even start high school.” Dempsey stayed in school until about the eighth grade and said, “I’m an old lady and I don’t have too much brain.” In truth, the sharp-tongued 106-year-old may lack formal education, but she isn’t short on brains.
In about 1919, at the young age of 18, Dempsey married her first husband, Marshall Hoffman, and moved with him to New Jersey. The marriage lasted about 23 years, until Hoffman passed away from tuberculosis.
Some of Dempsey’s most vivid memories come from her time in New Jersey, where she worked at a nightclub selling cigarettes and, more impressively, as an attractive coloratura soprano dubbed the “Swedish Nightingale.”
“I had quite a voice,” Dempsey admitted, adding that she had a solid group of fans. “I used to sing to the tables. People wanted me to sing to them, and they tipped me well.
“I had a job, and it was good money,” she said of her stint as a singer, though due to everything getting more expensive over time, “today they’d sneeze on” the $75 a week she made at the nightclub."

The youngest of George & Lauries children was George Washington Lumbard, born February 1905.  He married Margaret Mary O'Reilly and they had at least two daughters, Margaret & Carol.  George died in 1983 in York County Pa.

On September 26 1908, age 33, Laurie (Keller) Lumbard died. The cause of death onher death certificate is "angina pectoris" - heart attack?
Keller was 12, Kathleen 7, George 3, and Robert was 1 year old.

A year later, on November 17th 1909, George married his second wife, my great great grandmother, Beulah Laverda Simms, daughter of Albert C & Clara Louise (Mithcell) Simms, from Baltimore Maryland.  Beulah was the widow of Samuel A. Heppard, who died in 1903.  She had a son with Samuel, William H. Heppard, 1902-1964.

I would very much like to find a photo of Beulah, the only photos I have are of George & his first wife Laurie.

George & Beulah had 5 children: Joseph Asher Lumbard II (My great grandfather), Albert M. Lumbard, Ruth Laverda Lumbard who died age 5, Helen M. Lumbard, & Paul Lumbard.

Son Joseph Asher Lumbard II was born 1911, and died in 1954.  He married Nina Francis Ridge.

Son Albert Mead Lumbard was born August 1912, and died July 1975. He married Gertrude E. Smith. They had a son with downs syndrome die of Pneumonia in 1940, he was not quite 3 years old.  (They also had children Robert, Albert, & Janet)

Daughter Ruth Laverda Lumbard died of Scarlet fever in 1922, age 4.

Daughter Helen May Lumbard was born in September of 1918. In 1940 we find her in the census as a housekeeper for Marion Carl Boyer.  He was 44, she was 21.  He had 2 children, ages 9 & 6. In 1950,  Helen married Marion.  Marion died in 1975.  In 1989 Helen remarried to a Malcom Goodall.  Helen had no children of her own.

Son Paul Lincoln Lumbard was born in February of 1923. He served in World War II from 1941-1946, and then again in the Korean War. He married Lilian Gay Shadle in North Carolina, in 1944.  Paul died in July of 1990.

George Meade Lumbard died May 13 1925 in Snyder County Pa, age 51, of stomach cancer.  His obituary mentions that he was associated many years with his father in the publishing of the Snyder County Tribune.

More on the Children of George Lumbard:

"Just a note to inform you that your great Aunt Kitty (Kathleen Lumbard Hoffman Dempsey) grandaughter of Joseph Asher Lumbard and Sara Scharf Lumbard, passed away on July 9, 2007 at the age of 106.5 years. For your family tree records, she was born February 15, 1901. She was the oldest daughter of George Meade Lumbard and Anna Laura Keller Lumbard. She is buried in NJ next to her husband William Dempsey"
