Martin RItter Jr. was born 10 Aug 1760 at Salisbury, Northampton County; he died at Turbotville, Northumberland Co., Pa., 4 Feb 1840. 4 Jun 1781 in Easton, Northampton Co., Pa., he married Barbara Fredericks, who was born 22 Apr 1759 and died 8 Jul 1847 at Turbotville. During the Revolutionary War, Martin served as a fifer in Captain John Santees' Company, 2nd Battalion, Northampton County Miltia.

Martin's father came to America at the age of 16 - 
Martin, Sr. is an immigrant on the Pensilvania Merchant, 11 Sept 1732 into Philadelphia listed as Martin Ruyter under "women and children" with the rest of the family making him under 16 in 1732.

177? - Martin Ritter Was A Fifer In The Revolutionary War

Served in the Revolutionary War " Mr. Bright presented the petition and document of Barbara Ritter, of Northumberland county, stating the services of her late husband, Martin Ritter, in the Revolutionary war, and praying for relief."

1786 - Son George Adam Ritter Is Born
George served in the war of 1812.  He married Sophia Crist in 1813.  They are buried in Paradise Church Cemetery in Milton.

In 1870 there is an Elizabeth Ritter of the right age, if she never married, in the home of Thomas Weaver 23, with Mary Weaver age 52 also in residence, in Lycoming County. 

1793 - Son Martin Ritter Is Born
Martin married Catherine Karchner.  They settled in Columbia County PA.

1799 - Son Samuel Ritter is Born
Samuel Ritter married Christina Starr, and they are Dan's 4th great paternal grandparents.  You can read more about them here:

"Samuel E. Ritter, farmer, was born in Lycoming county, Pennsylvania, July 22, 1849, a son of Zebedee and Anna (Fox) Ritter. Martin Ritter, the great-grandfather of Samuel E. Ritter, was married to Barbara Fredericks, and to this union there were born eight children: John; George; Martin; Elizabeth; Barbara, Valentine; Jacob, and Samuel. The last two named came to Lycoming county; Samuel married Christiana Starr, by whom he had five children: Wiliam, deceased; John; Zebedee; George, and Mary. Zebedee Ritter was the father of Samuel E. Ritter, and married Anna Fox, by whom he had four children: Samuel E.; Mary J., who married John M. Snyder; John W., and Anthony, deceased. Our subject, Samuel E. Ritter, received a common school education, and has always devoted his life to farming. He was married in 1877 to Henrietta King, and to this union have been born six children (in 1892): Estella E.; Owen Z.; Raymond K.; Grover C.; Brady F., and Nellie B."

The Ritter Family

Of all family histories there is probably none more difficult to trace then that of the Ritter family.Thr name means a (Knight)and was originated in the Middle Ages,when the crusades were orgaized to redeem the the Holy Land.A society having for its objective the defence of the faith,the protection of the weak and the honor of womankind.It originated in Europe.This society was called the Die Ritterschaft,Meaning (Knighthood)Kistory informs us that this society flourished for a few centruies and mant people of rank as well as many people of middle and lower classes belonged to it.This society became corupt and was disbaned.the people of this time had no surnames but began to assune them.Many if not all belonged to this society and and assumed the name of RITTER.Thus in a very short time a lagre RITTER Family was brought into being in central Europe.Their principal stronghold seems to have been in the Palatinate,as nearly all the emigrations to America was from this place.
