Elias Arney 1815-1899

Dan's 3rd Great Grandparents, Maternal Line

 Elias Arney
Son Of
Birth: Sep. 17, 1815
Death: Aug. 18, 1899
Susan Fetterolf
Daughter of
Birth: Mar. 8, 1818
Death: Nov. 1, 1914

His birthdate is found differently by researchers all over the internet..  probably because it's different in every record!  Calculating back from the death date on his tombstone, using the age given on the tombstone, he was born Sept. 17 1815.

In the 1850 Census, he is listed as age 25, born in 1825.  He is actually 35 in 1850, so that is a simple mistake. in 1860 he is listed as 37, when he is actually 45.  In 1870 he is listed as 51, born in 1819 - he would actually be 55.  The children and wife are consistent, and the location is consistent, there is no reason to believe this is not the same Elias.

We know from their daughter Emma's obit that either Susan or Elias had a sister named "Mrs. J. Aunkst"

An article in the Harrisburg Telegraph in 1911 states that Susan never learned english - even though she was born here in America.  All of her children must have been fluent in German.

Both Elias SHOPE and his father-in-law, Elias ARNEY, were trustees of a deed for a new church, which still stands in Saville Township, Perry County. In fact, all are buried in its cemetery.
