*My Direct Line
Shared with me by researcher Jeffery Smith.  I've not yet been able to make any sort of educated guess about who all may be in this photo.

Time Line:

1797- Elizabeth Gillman is Born
maiden name is given on son Samuel's death certificate
On Ellen's death certificate, mothers name is "unknown"

I think Elizabeth may be the child of Jacob Gillman, and the grandaughter of Henry Gilman of White Deer.  That's just my thoughts, and where I am focusing my research next.  I have no proof at this time.

1799 - Samuel Born
December 30th 1799
using a tombstone calculator, and the dates on his tombstone, to come up with his date of birth.

in the Census - I cannot find Samuel until 1880 when he shows up with his son.  Elizabeth appears in 1860 & 1870 with her daughter Sarah Forney.

From the Biographical Sketch of Samuel's son Samuel Jr in the History of Lycoming County PA - SAMUEL A. BARTO JR was born in Union county, Pennsylvania, December 25, 1830, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Gillman) Barto. His grandfather, John Barto, was one of the pioneers of Union county. His father was a carpenter, which business he followed all his life. He reared seven children: Jonathan, of Illinois; William; Samuel A.; Sarah, wife of Henry Forney; Catharine, deceased wife of David McDaniel; Susan, wife of Samuel Lorman, and Ellen, wife of Frank Kneibler. Samuel, Sr., died in 1884. He was a Democrat in politics, and a Lutheran in religion.

From a message board - I think you are talking about Samuel Barto birth 30 Dec 1799 in Penn. death 22 Jul 1884 Salladasburg, Lycoming, PA.  I have his father as Jonathan Barto 17 Oct 1765 in Penn., 1834 in Penn.  I have his mother as Elizabeth Beeber 1771, 1836 no other information on her.  I do have Jonathans grands out three more generations if you would like that info.  This takes the Bartos to 1677.

See Post here - http://notheathersgen.blogspot.com/2012/06/john-barto-1765-1834.html
In the History of Lycoming County PA, Samuel is not listed as one of Jonathan's children.  However, if you scroll down to Jonathan son of Samuel, in this post, Jonathan is listed as Jonathan's grandfather.  I just don't know at this point.

NOTE - There is a Samuel Barto born in 1804 to Henry & Catherine (thought to be Christiana Werner) Barto.  The transcription appears to be a baptismal record, but the original record states that that this was his birth date.  This is likely the Samuel Barto 1804-1872 who married Maria Shuman.  He also was buried in Lycoming County.

1817 - Son William Barto is Born

1819 - Daughter Sarah Barto is born

1821  - Birth of Son Jonathan Barto

Jonathan was born October 4 1821 in PA.
He married Susanna Moore 1825-1902 in 1848, and sometime in or before 1863 he moved to Illinois where he died in 1905.  Jonathan & Susan had 5 children: Elizabeth Barto 1852–, Mary Barto 1860–, Harrison Barto 1862–.George W Barto 1862–1934 & William H Barto 1867–1938

Name Jonathan Barto

Birth Date 1821
Age at Death 84
Death Date 1905

Burial Place Eleroy, Stephenson County, Illinois, USA

In the Foot-prints of the Pioneers of Stephenson County, Illinois , Page 285

I believe the article above has a mistake when it refers to Elizabeth (Gillman) as the wife of Jonathan.  It then says that Elizabeth Gillman is the wife of Samuel..  I believe the first Elizabeth is actually Elizabeth Beeber.

1825 - Daughter Catherine Barto is born

Samuel Age 25   Elizabeth Age 27
Catherine was born in 1825. She married David McDaniel, according to Biographical Sketch of Samuel's son Samuel Jr in the History of Lycoming County.

In 1850, A William McDaniel, who appears to be David's brother, lives with them.  In 1860, William is still living with Catharine, but David appears to be deceased, or at least not living with them.

In 1880 Catherine is age 65, listed as a widow, living in Milton Pa with her children David, James & Abraham.  She has two grandchildren living with her as well - Harry & Minnie Starks.  Harry is found, at age 15, in  in the Pennsylvania, Prison, Reformatory, and Workhouse Records, 1829-1971

1830 Son Samuel Barto is born

Samuel Age 30 Elizabeth Age 32
Samuel Barto was born December 25, 1830, in Union County PA. He married Henrietta Dieffenbacher in 1851 & they had the following children:

Samuel lived in Lycoming County Pa. He died September 4 1909 in Jersey Shore, Lycoming County Pa.

SAMUEL A. The subject of this sketch was reared in Danville, Pennsylvania, and received a public school education. At the age of eighteen he located at Jersey Shore, learned the carpenter's trade, and engaged in that business at Liberty, Tioga county. He remained there seven years, and two years later located on his present farm in Piatt township, where he carried on his trade in connection with farming. Mr. Barto was married in 1852, to Henrietta, daughter of William Dieffenbacher, and has had the following children: William D. and Abner A., both deceased; Frances, wife of Samuel C. Willitts; Elmer, and Sarah E., deceased. Elmer married Mary McLaughlin, and has three children: Weldon F.; William D., and Henrietta. Mr. Barto is a Republican, and has filled several of the local offices of his township, He is a class-leader in the Evangelical church, and is superintendent of the Sunday school in that organization.

Possible - this Samuel is listed as a carpenter -

WHO Is Susan Deter? Sarah had a sister, Susan Barto, but she married a Lorman?  Check to see if she married a Lorman second and a Deter first...but I think she would be about 40, not 30, in 1860.

Burial:
I made a trip to Salladasburg this week, and photographed the tombstone, and the ones around it, for myself. The Sarah listed under Samuel here is his grandaughter, not his wife - so I am guessing his wife is buried in Montour County?

Research

=============================================================

In 1880 there is an Elizabeth living with Daniel, listed as his mother, but I do not think this is related - they are found in the 1870 Census too, and we know that "our" Elizabeth is living with her daughter Sarah in 1870.  Some researchers list Daniel as an additional child of Samuel & Elizabeth (Gillman) Barto, but based on the census info below, I think this is a mistake.
