Time Line:

1752- Jacob Bauman is born
Born in Germany

Benjamin Bowman, son of Samuel and Mary Magdalena Klinger Bowman, lived
In Eldora, Iowa. In his letter of 1929 to "my dear cousin", he declined returning to Canton, Ohio for the annual reunion "because I an now 94 years old". In other letters he wrote, he expressed a keen Interest In the search of the Bowman-Kllnger families.

In one such letter, dated 14 November, with no year specified, Benjamin wrote of his grandfather, meaning Jacob Bauman, "My grandfather came from Germany before he was
married. My father was six months old when they moved from Schuylkill  County to Northumberland County- -".

"My grandfather's father's first wife had died before my grandfather left Germany and had married his second wife, stepmother of my grandfather. They later came to America,
but did not settle very near their son, as I think they were not on very good terms ".

"My father knew little about his grandparents, but did say they lived in Pennsylvania,"

"My father's birthplace was within  twenty miles of Philadelphia, In Schuylkill County" (?),

Jacob Bauman, written by grandson Jonathan
"Now, about my grandfather Bowman, I know but very little. Don't know his first name or who he was married to, but I know some of the names of their children and who they married. I will commence with the boys first. There was a John, who I mentioned before, but I know not who he married, but I mind of seeing one of his boys about 65 years ago. He had come to my father's on a visit, and Jacob Bownan of Fike, who was married to Hannah Klinger, an older sister of my mother, mentioned before. Samuel, my father comes next. I did mention that before,he died when about 74 years old and my mother was about 77 years old when she died. Both are buried at Hapleton, on the hill. There was a Henry, the youngest of the boys, who lived on the old homestead, but that is all I know about him.

One of the girls was married to a Harter. This Andrew Harter of Osnaburg, she was his great grandmother, and one was married to Jacob Clark, and the youngest was married to Peter Redinger (Hettinger), Both are buried at Osnaburg, and the Clarks are burled at Paris, The Clarks' family are all dead, and so are the Redingers, except one Mrs. Manda --- of Osnaburg.

I forgot to mention that Jacob and Hannah Bowman are buried on their own land. There is a log church and a small cemetery on the farm.

My Grandfather Bowman must have lived close to the Susquehanna River, for my father used to talk so much about fishing in that river in the daytime, and after night, they would set their nets in the evening, and in the morning, get buckets full of fish, mostly shad, in the spring of the year, I cannot recollect anything of their names or of towns or post office. They used to write Henry, but of their post office address, I know nothing, except the County was Northumberland."  - http://notheathersgen.blogspot.com/2015/12/life-of-jonathan-bowman-1821-1908.html

Church Records/Membership/Attendance:
"While researching the BAUMAN-BOWMAN families of Pennsylvania, learned these families had, at one time, attended the Stone Valley Church, Lower Mahanoy Township; Himmel or Schwaben Creek Church, near Rebuck in Washington Townships and, David's
or Hartter's Church, Hebe, Jordan Township, all three Lutheran churches being located in Northumberland County.

In addition to their attendance at these three churches, they also were members of KLINGER'S Lutheran Church  in Dauphin County. The fact that the Bowmans and related families weremembers of four churches may be the result of the period of time when each of these churches was founded, and secondly, the distance in miles to travel to attend the church of their choice may also have been an important factor. " -Records of the Klinger Church, Dauphin Co, PA, Including Bowman & Klinger Families" compiled by Mary Ellen Bowman, 1975

1777 - Birth of Son Jacob Bauman Jr
Jacob Bauman JR was born February 22 1777.  Jacob married Hanna Klinger in the Zion Lutheran Church, Dauphin County Pa.  In 1817 Jacob, Jr., Samuel, Jacob Clark and Peter Rettinger John Bauman, John Clark and Samuel Geise went to Stark County Ohio.  John Bauman, John Clark and Samuel Geise returned to PA, the others bought land and stayed in Ohio.

Jacob and his wife donated the land for the Church (now gone) and this cemetery. He and his wife Hannah had  9 children.  John Bowman 1802-1888,  Mary Bowman, 1804-,   Henry owman, 1807-1892 , Samuel Bowman 1808-,  Catharine Bowman 1809-1888,
Sara Bowman 1812-1888,  Lydia Bowman 1814-1894, Hannah Bowman 1816-1862, Jacob Bowman III 1823-1898

Later the spelling of the name Baumann was changed to Bowman.   Hannah and Jacob were buried on their own land in Stark County, Ohio, USA, near East Sparta. There is a log church and small cemetery on the farm.

Bowman Cemetery, Pike Township, Stark County, Ohio, USa can be found as follows: From Interstate 77, take Route 800 (Cleveland Ave) South, approximately 5 to 8 miles. Just South of Howenstine, turn left on East Sparta Ave (Pike Township Garage will be on the right). This road winds parallel to Route 800 for some distance and crosses over several times. Go approximately 1 mile and turn left on either Elson St or Newmont St (the only roads to the left). Both of these roads intersect at the top of the hill and Bowman Cemetery is located at their juncture (on the left or right depending on which road you take). They are township roads and are very hilly and curvy. -

I am not able to tell just when he was born, but I presume In about 1780. The records were all burned when Isaac's house was burned, but he got married when he was about 27 years old. Mother was about five years younger, that I mind from hearsay. They had four children in Pennsylvania, Daniel, Jacob, Joseph and Samuel, Samuel was only a few months old when they moved to Ohio, Jacob died in Pennsylvania when about two years old." There was a story somewhere about one of Jacob's children slipping on a log while crossing  the creek on the way to church, and dying. I can't remember where I read this. Need to see if I can find the story.

John Brady Bowman, who began the Bowman family research in the 1920's,tells that Catharina was drowned in the Mahantango creek on a Sunday morning.

I have Jacob BOWMAN(1752-1829) m Susanna BRUCH (1758-1827) with ch: Jacob, Jr, Samuel (1779-1856), John, Elizabeth, Mary , Catharine, Hannah, Sarah (m Peter RETTINGER), Henry & Susanna. This is from "Records of the Klinger Church, Dauphin Co, PA, Including Bowman & Klinger Families" compiled by Mary Ellen Bowman, 1975. Have you seen it? It contains a piece - "Life of Jonathan Bowman" - written by Jonathan, s/o Samuel, which also indicates that Susanna was the youngest. It seems that my Peter & family moved to OH later that Samuel & Jacob, Jr. His son, Benjamin was bp at Klinger's Ch in 1822, so it was aft. that. Jonathan indicates that John BOWMAN, Susanna & husb Jacob CLARK, Mary & husb John Daniel CLARK, & Hannah & husb Samuel GEISE all went together c1817, with John BOWMAN & Hannah (BOWMAN) GEISE & fams returning to Pa. He mentions his brother, Daniel, as the oldest, m to Susanna LOVELL.

From Ancestry.com
The history of DeKalb County, Indiana says that Jacob BAUMAN came to America from Germany in 1772 and that he fought in the American Revolution. There is no known proof which would substantiate this information. An old letter indicates that he was not a citizen at the time of the Revolution so it unlikely that he fought in that war (Source: Mary Ellen BOWMAN)

A Jacob Bauman with this household composition was listed in Dauphin Co. Pa. and in Montgomery Co. Pa.The Dauphin Co. Baumans were still there in 1800 after "our" Jacob had moved to Nor. Co. The one listed on Page 159 of the census index in Montgomery Co. Is a likely candidate for "our' Jacob Bauman for the following reasons:

1. A Jacob Bauman, son of Jacob and Susanna, was baptized at the New Hanover Church Phila. (Later became Montgomery Co. ) Pa. in 1777. The date corresponds with the birth date of "our" Jacob's son. Grandparents were Jacob And Susannah Bauman.

2. A Jacob Bauman was taxed in New Hanover Twp in 1782.

3. A birth record for Susanna Bruch was found at the Tohican Reformed Church in Bucks Co. Pa. 04 Sep 1757 daughter of Mathias Bruch and Anna Barbara.
This is relatively close to New Hanover Twp. This varies by 6 months from the date on her tombstone, but it is close enough to be considerd "our" Susannah.

4. A death record for Anna Catherine Bruch was recorded at New Hanover Church 23 Sep. 1784. She died at age 80 years, 19days.

5 The grandmother recorded at the birth of Jacob Bauman in 1777 may be the Susannah LEFFINGER (Lessinger, Leisinger) that family tradition gives as a name of Jacob's wife.
